When we say “USA-made,” what does that mean? What goes into making the clothes you wear? Who makes your clothes?
One of them is an amazing guy named Andy who has been helping create MAJAMAS EARTH garments for over 10 years! Andy took a minute to tell us all about work, what makes USA sew shops different, and why fabric is way easier to work with than Chinese food…
What’s your name and where are you from?
My name is Andy and I was born and raised in China but create and construct in Jersey.
What got you started in this business?
My family and I worked in the garment manufacturing business in China, but we were looking to gain more opportunities and freedom that came with owning our own business in the US, so we all came over and developed our own company.
What do you like most about working at your company?
We enjoy the flexibility and opportunity of producing USA Made garments and I MUCH prefer working in the apparel industry. For a while I owned a Chinese restaurant and was always worried about so many things, one being the spoiling of my inventory, which I don’t have to worry about anymore because fabric doesn’t spoil! With more stable standards its a lot easier for me to focus on ensuring great quality all around.
What is your favorite fun fact that you can share with us?
Every day is a family affair for us. Every day I am surrounded by my brothers and sisters and their extended families… some days it is great, other days not so much! Picture having a holiday with your family every day.
What should people know about USA-made product?
It takes so much more to make things in the US than in China: I work very hard to keep my shop clean and safe which is uncommon about a lot of sew shops around the world. I work even harder to pay my employees fair wages and give them 8 hour days, which is also uncommon back home. This costs me and my customers more money but we are more grateful and proud of our business.
