Mother Earth Day – 5 Ways to Green-Up Mother’s Day Gifting

MAJAMAS EARTH BLOG 144 MAY 2019 Final.jpg

There’s a lot to celebrate in May and I gotta admit, it’s my favorite month of the year. My daughter and I celebrate our same-day birthdays, then Mother’s Day hits mid-month and it all wraps up with a three-day weekend on Memorial Day signaling the start of summer.

But let’s focus on Mother’s Day. It’s a day to show your mom how much you love and appreciate her and we’re here to help you make it a Mother Earth Day.

In the spirit of keeping Earth Day alive all year, may I suggest five ways to gift your Mom and get the most out of spring without negatively impacting our planet:

Pink Peony Flowers1. Flowers

Flowers are one of the most purchased gifts for Mother’s Day.

I’m not gonna deny it, a bunch of cut flowers make a beautiful gift, but when they’re wrapped in single use plastic or cellophane… yes, there is a difference…. it turns a beautiful bouquet into trash (literally).

If you can’t buy them from a florist who wraps them in burlap like our friends at Flowers for Dreams or cut them yourself, stop at a local nursery and pick up a flowering potted plant that will last longer than cut flowers.

If mom likes to garden, ask about the best flowering perennial for her weather zone and get one she can enjoy annually. I still have tea roses that come up every spring from a Mother’s Day long, long ago and every year they’re more beautiful than ever.

If Mom has allergies and bringing her flowers is like taking Kryptonite to Superman, nab her a pair of floral pants, like our Bagliore Crop Pant or Polsino Pant.

They’re ethically USA made and come in a variety of whimsical floral prints. Better yet, pick up a Gift Box that includes one of our eco-friendly tops. We’ll box it for you and you’ll save 15% on the set.

She can wear them to that Memorial Day barbecue with a strappy sandal and of course as sleepwear and since they’re made from wicking fabric that’s soft and versatile, she may end up wearing them 24/7.

Donate to One Tree Planted at checkout and you’ll still be greening up the planet without annoying your mother… good job!

3. More Mom Time

Not spending enough time with Mom?

Instead of going to brunch and fighting the crowds, how bout taking mom on a long hike or even a garden walk? Spending time in nature is meditative, relieves stress and makes conversation easier. Plus surrounding yourself with greenery and forest bathing reminds us we’re all part of the same ecosystem. Kinda like bringing us all back to our roots.

Mom not into walking much?

Host a family game night this Mother’s Day. Play a game of Scrabble and show her that college education didn’t go to waste when you lay down words like QI or QAT on a Double Word Tile. She’ll love getting the chance to chat and you’ll score big points for spending your Sunday hanging out with her.

Playing a board game slows down the conversation and who knows, you may distract her from bringing up that touchy topic about your dream of becoming the next big rap star… not that there’s anything wrong with that…

4. Untraditional Mom

If your mom is one of your dads too, pick ‘em up a pair of our eco-friendly Marco Shorts.

Our MAJAMAS EARTH Men’s collection is just as versatile as our Women’s and they’ll love the looser fit.

All of our bottoms have front, printed lined pockets and they’re made with our soft Cotton/Modal making them perfect for wearing on a hot summer weekend or to that backyard barbecue.

Don’t forget to add a buck to One Tree Planted as you check out! Again, a great way to green up the planet.

Boutique Bag and Bra.jpg5. Wrap It Up

Finally, stop wrapping ALL your gifts in single use wrapping paper.

We ship our orders in a free cloth boutique bag made from our excess fabrics with recyclable tissue. Use it to gift her, or anyone, in style. Our re-usable bags make great totes for carrying shoes, groceries or more gifts to your mom.

If you don’t have one on hand, use newspaper (if you still get those), brown craft paper or even a cut, flattened-out brown paper shopping bag. All are recyclable and compostable and won’t end up in a landfill like traditional wrapping paper. Tie it up with a raffia bow and you’ll have a sophisticated, enticing package your gifted will love to open.

If they come from the heart, all gifts are created equal and they don’t always have to come from a store.

It’s been over 20 years since I’ve spent a Mother’s Day with my mom. Not a day passes that I don’t think of her and I’m incredibly grateful for all she taught me about protecting our environment. She was my inspiration for starting my company and my main inspiration for making sure MAJAMAS EARTH leaves the smallest impact possible on our planet. She preached more than I do about recycling, saving water and cutting back on what we throw into our landfills… I know, hard to imagine, right?

I’m pretty sure she’d be proud of our mission to preserve Mother Earth so our kids can enjoy all its natural beauty for years to come.

I’ve learned good mothers only want the best for their children and by saving our planet, we’re saving our children’s future. Join ME and gift responsibly this Mother’s Day and let’s continue making every holiday Earth Day!
