The New York Times calls Dose Market a “curated flea market” but it’s far from a dusty warehouse filled with old stuff. Yeah, there are hundreds of vendors selling their wares, their food and working their “craft” but Dose is so much more.
This February 12th, MAJAMAS will be part of Love Dose, and we are honored to be a part of this talented group of clothing, jewelry and food vendors.
Since this is our first Dose Market, we reached out to April Francis, Founder/Creator of Dose to get the skinny on what a Dose market entails:
Germaine: Tell us how and why you started Dose Markets!
April: I started Dose Market so that my talented friends making interesting things might reach their customers directly: Dose was started out of necessity after the recession when boutiques were closing and leaving designers high and dry (not paying them, not returning merchandise when they closed, etc.) I had so many talented maker friends and was a huge fan of so many boutiques and eateries in the city I thought it would be amazing to bring them all together for a day so everyone could get all their shopping done in one spot. Plus, the money spent at Dose stays in Chicago, unlike when shopping at department and big box stores.
Germaine: What’s your favorite thing about Dose?
April: No brainer — my favorite thing about Dose is the people. I love all of the small business owners and shoppers who appreciate them: ages 0 – 100
Germaine: You have themes like HoliDose for Christmas time and Love Dose for Valentine’s Day. What makes each Dose Market unique?
April: Each Dose is curated based on the moment it will hit, so we curate unique lineups for every Dose so shoppers enjoy coming to all of them.
Germaine: How many do you do in a year and what themes are they based upon?
April: We are currently doing Doses quarterly but we’ve done as many as 17 in one year! The four we will do in 2017 are seasonal: Valentine’s Day, spring, fall and HoliDose.
Germaine: Are the markets always in the same location?
April: The market has been at Morgan Manufacturing in Chicago’s West Loop for a while and we love hosting Doses here. (401 N. Morgan in Chicago) Dose started at the River East Art Center and we’ve produced at other venues like the Chicago Cultural Center and Soho House.
Germaine: How many vendors show at Dose markets?
April: On average, the big, quarterly Doses we are doing now average about 100 – 120 Doses at each.
Germaine: Why should someone attend a Dose market?
April: People should attend Dose Market because it’s fun … and everything about it supports self-reliance, doing good work and supporting others. It’s a great way to spend a whole Sunday: as we say, you can eat, shop, laugh, lounge and score! Get Dosed!
What better way can you spend the Sunday before Valentine’s Day? Now more than ever, we need to support the organizations and companies that strengthen our communities and improve our world. Love Dose is exactly that kind of event! We hope you’ll join MAJAMAS in supporting the amazing vendors at Love Dose this February 12th. We look forward to seeing you there!
